Chapter 30

“She what?” Lilly was evidently surprised.

“She propositioned me for sex in the bathroom,” Danielle reiterated. “I can’t believe I forgot to tell you.”

Lilly grinned wide and poked Danielle. “Why didn’t you go for it?”

“You’re kidding me, right?”

“No, I’m deadly serious. She’s pretty good looking, and it’s spontaneous. The sex might have been sizzling.”

“No, thank you.”

“What—spontaneity isn’t your style?” Lilly poured Danielle a small glass of wine.

“There’s a difference between spontaneity and lewdness, Lilly. It was a restaurant, not a cabin on a lake. Not to mention, it was Melissa Lambert.”

“What’s wrong with Melissa Lambert? She’s attractive, and smart—”

“And psycho, if you ask me.”

“Psycho? Where does that come from? She’s a friend of Nathalie’s, and she works for the RCMP.”

“I don’t care who she works for or who she’s friends with. There’s something not right about that woman. My spidey senses tingle every time she’s near.”

“That’s called sexual arousal, Danielle.” Lilly laughed, then teased Danielle. “I know it’s been a while for you, but…”

“Ha, ha. Good one. But I’m not dead in that department, I’ll have you know.”

“Oh, really? So if it isn’t Melissa Lambert who’s making you tingle, who is it?”

Danielle could still feel Nathalie’s arms around her, could still feel her breasts pressed against hers, and how while they held each other, Danielle’s hands did not physically move, but in her mind, had slipped under Nathalie’s shirt and touched her bare skin…

Danielle wanted to tell Lilly this but she couldn’t.

“Did you get a chance to read over the material I gave you?” Danielle very much wanted to change the subject, and did.

“Yes, I did.” Lilly got up and retrieved some papers from her briefcase. “I hate to break it to you, but you must have mixed up some calculations—or just been too tired to see the numbers properly. Everything’s accounted for. The surgery logs match the inventory exactly.”

“What?” Danielle grabbed the paperwork and looked it over. She was floored. “I can’t believe this.”

“You’re tired, Danielle. You’re sleeping in a strange bed, and you’re dealing with a stressful breakup. It’s not surprising you’re seeing things that aren’t really there.”

Danielle kept staring at the sheets of paper she was holding.

“Danielle, I’ve looked them over very carefully. There’s no mistake. In the morning, you can go over every single calculation again for yourself.”

“But I could have sworn…”

“I know. But that’s why it’s important to have another set of eyes sometimes. Especially when you’re tired. And speaking of which, we both need sleep.”

***

Danielle was swimming in a chalice of chai tea. The tea was not warm and soothing, but cold and stale. She looked for the mermaid but could not find her.

“Fifty laps around the chalice,” the voice commanded.

Danielle cried tears of remorse as she did her penance.

First thing Danielle did Friday morning after she got to work was go over the figures from the paperwork Lilly returned to her. Lilly was right. It did add up. Danielle felt somewhat deflated by this, but she refused to let it get her down. She picked up the phone and called Gillian Stevens.
